A very interesting whiskey from Glenmorangie, the first whiskey to be made with vegetable-based barley.

Inspired by the woodlands near the home of Glenmorangie Whiskey Creative Director Dr Bill Lumsden, he decided to create a whiskey that would evoke the smells, sounds and sights of the forest.

Drying barley with botanicals was once a common practice, which Granger has revived here after a series of experiments.

Barley is toasted with juniper berries, birch bark and heather, and a dash of peat for a Glenmorangie that, in Dr Lumsden's words, is "as lush and leafy as the forest itself".

To allow the spirit's flavors to shine through, he ages the whiskey in bourbon barrels, including many refills.

Nose: Forest floor aromas headed by oily pine and juniper, nutty malt and woody spices with a muffled smoke in the distance.

Taste: A rich array of menthol and orange peel, hints of hibiscus and vanilla pods, with anise, anise and smoky toffee in the background.

Finish: Candied citrus fruit on the finish, more pine and robust barley intertwined with fine oak charcoal.
