In 1840, Don Felipe de la Mata, the eighth Marquis of Vargas, decided to plant the first grapes at La Hacienda Pradolagar. Since then, four generations of this family have planted vineyards on this estate. Don Pelayo de la Mata, Count of San Cristóbal, and his brother Don Francisco, the ninth Marquis of Vargas, who was elected mayor of Logroño, continued the passion for the vines in Pradolagar.
One particularly outstanding figure was Don Hilario de la Mata, the tenth Marquis of Vargas and father of the current Marquis, who was chairman of an important winery group and co-owner of another company in the sector. Just like his predecessors, Don Hilario, who was passionate about the world of wine, always dreamed of owning his own winery and producing a wine under the family name. Sadly, he died at a very young age and was unable to realize his dream.
In 1989, Don Pelayo de la Mata, 11th Marquis of Vargas, and his brothers and sisters saw their father’s dream come true when the winery that is today was built on the site of Hacienda Pradolagar in Logroño, in the heart of Rioja Alta.

Tasting Notes
Ripe red fruits. Ruby color with a hint of life and a light spicy finish. The wine is well structured. It is complex, smooth and balsamic. Sweet and elegant tannins, polished during aging in American, French and Russian oak barrels.
The selected grapes used in the Marqués Vargas reserve come from our 50-hectare vineyard "Hacienda Pradolagar". Marqués de Vargas favors environmental protection concepts and sustainable grape-growing practices. No herbicides and pesticides are used in our vineyards, and only organic fertilizers are used occasionally.
The wine is traditionally made according to old methods juxtaposed with state-of-the-art technology. The wine is bottled without any fining or filtration, resulting in an unprocessed and completely natural wine.
